Arlene received her B.A. degree in Linguistics from New York University, and her M.A. in English (Technical Writing) from San Jose State University. She worked for 20 years in the high-tech industry for several companies (Mentor Graphics, Integrated Measurement Systems, and Credence Systems), initially as a Technical Writer and later as a Director of Hardware Engineering. Arlene currently serves on the Board of Directors for Print Arts Northwest and on the Advisory Board of the Center for Excellence in Writing at Portland State University.

 

Patricia Rau, Volunteer Program Officer for Education and Environment categories

Patricia received her B.S. degree in Business from Marylhurst University. She worked for 25 years in the high-tech industry for several large and small companies (Hewlett-Packard, Sequent, and E-Machines), in various global roles including Strategic Alliance and Partnerships, Business Development, Marketing and Program Management. She has been actively involved with the foundation for the last two years.

 

 

Hon Mai Goodman

Hon-Mai was born in Macao, and came to the USA to attend Clarke College in Dubuque Iowa. Following graduation with a B.A. degree from Clarke, she entered a dietetic internship program at Stanford University Hospital. Upon completion of her internship, she worked as a dietitian at Stanford University Hospital until her marriage. During the years 1978-1983 she was Assistant to the Editor of the Journal of the Optical Society of the America.

 

Joseph W. Goodman

Joe received his A.B. degree in Engineering and Applied Physics from Harvard University, and his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Electrical Engineering from Stanford University, where he is currently William E. Ayer Professor of Electrical Engineering, Emeritus. He served as Chair of the Department of Electrical Engineering (1988-1996) and as Senior Associate Dean of Engineering (1996-1998). He recently served on the Board of E-TEK Dynamics, and was formerly Chairman of the Board of ONI Systems. He serves on Technical Advisory Boards for a multitude of small photonics companies.

Michele received her B.A. degree in Applied Mathematics from the University of California at San Diego, and her M.B.A. in Information Systems from Golden Gate University. She worked for 15-years in the hi-tech industry for several companies (Sun Microsystems, Sequent Computer Systems, and Intel Corp.) initially as a Software Engineer and later as a Marketing Manager. She serves on the Board of Directors for Metropolitan Family Service, Oregon Environmental Council, and Portland Women's Foundation.

 

Alexander A. Sawchuk

Sandy was born in Washington, D.C. He received the B.S. degree in Electrical Engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Electrical Engineering from Stanford University. He has been employed by the National Bureau of Standards, the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, and the Communications Satellite Corporation. In 1971, he joined the University of Southern California, and is now a Professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering. From 1978 to 1988 and 1990 to 1991 he was the Director of the Signal and Image Processing Institute.

 

Mariette T. Sawchuk

Mariette received her bachelor's degree summa cum laude from Northwestern University in Evanston Illinois. She earned her master's and doctoral degrees in English and American literature from Stanford University. She is the author/editor of four monographs in the Celebrating Cultural Diversity Series from Prism Publishing. Mariette is a founder and associate of The Write Way Consulting, a strategic communications firm specializing in fund raising and public relations for non-profit organizations.

 

Eric A. Wan

Eric received his B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from Stanford University. He is currently an Associate Professor at the OGI School of Science and Engineering, Oregon Health & Science University, where he is also a co-director of the Center for Spoken Language Understanding. His research and teaching interests include signal processing, control, and machine learning.
