Joe received his A.B. degree in Engineering and Applied Physics from Harvard University, and his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Electrical Engineering from Stanford University, where he is currently William E. Ayer Professor of Electrical Engineering, Emeritus. He served as Chair of the Department of Electrical Engineering (1988-1996) and as Senior Associate Dean of Engineering (1996-1998). He recently served on the Board of E-TEK Dynamics, and was formerly Chairman of the Board of ONI Systems. He serves on Technical Advisory Boards for a multitude of small photonics companies.
