Our Vision
We envision a world of communities in which all families live in a sustainable environment, receive great educations, have access to diverse arts, and thrive in good health.
Our Values Drive Our Work
Equity: While acknowledging our position of power and privilege, we use this position as a platform to provide opportunities for people to live a better quality of life. Our grant making process uses a lens to ensure that the work we do benefits the under-resourced and under-represented as they are disproportionately affected by many of the issues our communities face today.
Stewardship: We take a long view and work steadily to accomplish our goals. We know that change can take years and we are committed to taking that journey side by side with our grantees. While we are courageous and willing to take risks, our board of directors practice good governance to ensure that the Foundation will be effective for many years into the future.
Respectfulness: We treat everyone with respect, we are transparent, and we trust our grantees. We believe that nonprofits working in our communities are experts in their field, our foundation isn't here to change our grantee's priorities but instead we use our position to reinforce and support their voices. We practice trust-based philanthropy and continue to evolve our grant making process so grantees can spend more time working in their communities and less time fundraising.
Impact: The foundation seeks grant making opportunities where we can make a big impact. At times this feels especially challenging because of our small size thus we search for ways to collaborate with others and we look for opportunities where our grant can be used as leverage toward nonprofit fundraising goals.

Our Mission
The JW & HM Goodman Foundation seeks to express its loyalty and commitment to those individuals and organizations that had a positive impact on the lives of the Grantors and to explore and support important and necessary programs that improve the quality of life.
Founding Donor Letter of Intent
We, Joseph W. and Hon Mai Goodman, have contributed funds to the above-named foundation to improve the quality of life in the San Francisco Bay and Portland Oregon areas, primarily supporting: education for financially disadvantaged youth; health and human services to those who could not otherwise afford them; environmental education and improvement of the environment; opportunities for women and minorities to prepare for careers in science, engineering or health care; and support of the arts.
